The information presented on this website is a product of over three decades of research at more than 200 rocky intertidal monitoring sites. A research project of this magnitude is possible solely through the cooperation of the Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network (MARINe), a large consortium of research groups working together to collect compatible data that are entered into a centralized database. Long-Term Monitoring and Biodiversity Surveys done by MARINe occur throughout the year at sites ranging from Southeast Alaska to Mexico. The synthesis of this research has resulted in the pacific rocky intertidal monitoring program website—a summary of data, methods, and products of this research, with interactive mapping and graphing features.
MARINe is funded entirely by the independent contributions of its members. Special recognition should go to the agencies who have provided the majority of continuous funding for the project over several decades: Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, The National Park Service, The California Ocean Protection Council, Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans, and US Navy (Navy Marine Ecology Consortium).
Extensive efforts have been made to ensure that online data are accurate and up to date; however because of the magnitude of this program, some errors may have been missed. Before using these data for analysis or presentation, please make a Data Request to ensure that trends and patterns are interpreted correctly.
This website and associated data summaries and graphs have been developed by the rocky intertidal research group at University of California, Santa Cruz. The Principal Investigator for this group is Pete Raimondi (raimondi@ucsc.edu). To reference the materials available on this website, please use the citation format here.
